Episode 66: Ohana Means Family

Welcome home, everyone! Join us this week as we introduce the newest member of the Hillebrand Family – Stitch! We also have news about an upcoming donation drive we’ll be hosting!

Dog of the Week

“We adopted Stitch on Saturday, January 30, 2021, so he is very new to the Hillebrand family! We weren’t allowed to have more than one dog at our old house, and knew that we wanted to get a second dog once we were settled into our new home.

On Saturday morning, Bart put us in the virtual line (COVID precaution) at the ARL and we brought Pippi down to pick out her new best friend. We told the employee we didn’t care about breed, age, or gender, and she introduced us to Stitch (shelter name-Yeti) who we immediately fell in love with. The employee at the shelter told us that he was brought in as a stray and he’s clearly been attacked before, as he has multiple scars on his body.

He did so well with Pippi that we decided he was the perfect fit for us. We’ve only had him for a day, so we don’t know too much about him yet, but so far he’s been very snuggly and loves napping and playing. He’s made it very clear that he feels comfortable here and can tell he’s finally safe.

We named him Stitch because that’s Bart’s favorite movie and just like the original Stitch, he’s the missing piece that our family didn’t know we needed.

We are so happy to have him home with us.” Stitch’s mom, Paige

Charity of the Week:
Animal Rescue League of Iowa

The ARL serves people and pets from across the state of Iowa through its programs, which include pet adoption, humane education, pet behavior training, spay/neuter, animal cruelty intervention and much more. The Animal Rescue League is dependent on individual and corporate contributions to care for its animals.

  • The ARL receives no state, federal or United Way funding.
  • The ARL takes seriously the investments of its donors and supporters for the care of the animals.
  • The ARL, governed by a volunteer board of directors, adheres to standard accounting practices; conducts an annual independent audit; and carefully and frugally manages its resources in order to care for as many animals as possible for decades to come.
  • The ARL is a 501c3 nonprofit organization.
  • The ARL is a Better Business Bureau Accredited Charity, meeting all 20 Standards for Charity Accountability

We only euthanize animals that are dangerous or suffering, and that is only after we have exhausted all other humane and responsible options. We do not euthanize for lack of space in the shelter. Ending suffering and enhancing public safety is a responsibility we take seriously.

Every decision we make is based on the globally accepted Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare Under Human Control:

1. Freedom from Hunger and Thirst by ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigor.

2. Freedom from Discomfort by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area.

3. Freedom from Pain, Injury, and Disease by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment.

4. Freedom to Express Normal Behavior by providing sufficient space, proper facilities, and company of the animal’s own kind.

5. Freedom from Fear and Distress by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering.” –ARL

Episode 65: The Week of Early Deliveries

Welcome home everyone! Join us this week for our first week in review of 2021! You’ll definitely notice a theme of “new year, new things”

Dog of the Week

“Olive was born on 12/27/2012 in Ukraine, and brought to the states by her previous owners in October of 2016. I became her dog mama on 12/2/2016 after her sister, Truffle, was attacked by her previous owners Weimaraner and almost died, leaving Olive traumatized. She has moved with me twice since then, and helped me through a messy divorce. She loves belly rubs and always needs to be right next to me, be-it on my bed behind me while I work, or curled up on my lap while I watch tv or read. She loves long walks and sniffing around, she also loves sweaters in the winter and barking at the mail (not the mail-person, just the mail). In 2017 she had 22 teeth removed due to decay in her mouth, leaving her with her four canines and a molar… so sometimes her tongue hangs out just a tiny bit (it’s adorable). She LOVES boiled chicken and chicken jerky.” – Olive’s mom, Chloe

Episode 64: We Get Excited About Old People Things Now

Welcome home everyone! Join us this week as we discuss our first set of favorite things for 2021! Come back next week for our week in review

Dog of the Week

“This is Olive, stealer of all the human food. A friend couldn’t handle her after a year and she gave her to us, and it’s been love ever since. She’s an escape artist, through and through. She can wiggle her way under almost any fence, but only travels a few houses away before running back home. She’s my baby, even though she was intended to be a dog for my daughter. I’m her person. If she’s not in the same room as me, it’s because the kids have food somewhere and she’s begging, or she’s sleeping with her butt next to Ethan’s butt. They do sleep butt to butt 🤣 She always wants in the car but is too anxious for them. She doesn’t care for men, but tolerates a couple (don’t we all…🤣) “We don’t need a doorbell, we know you’re here” is our motto.” – Olive’s mom, Hannah

Charity of the Week:
Heart To Heart International

“We imagine a world in which every person has access to a healthy life and every community has the capacity to make that access a reality. We believe that sustained access to health sets the foundation for individual and community development. In everything we do, we work to broaden access to healthcare services and build capacity for health. It’s a lofty vision, but we take a step closer to it every day through support from people like you. Invest in our efforts to create a healthier world today.

Heart to Heart International has launched international, domestic and local responses to COVID-19. HHI deployed a team of infection prevention and control experts to the Marshall Islands to develop the country’s COVID response and continues to support remotely. HHI’s Haiti team has a community health worker program focusing now on COVID-19 information campaigns. In Puerto Rico, HHI is working with partners to implement virtual monitoring and a helpline for those experiencing symptoms. HHI’s mobile medical unit with doctors and nurses is being utilized to support community members experiencing housing instability. Across the U.S., HHI is distributing hygiene kits for those in vulnerable populations. HHI has collected and distributed personal protective equipment, including masks, gowns, and sanitizers to clinics, hospitals and first responding organizations. HHI remains an active member of healthcare coalitions, providing gap support so that service organizations can continue to operate.” – Heart to Heart

Dog of the Week

“Cooper
Maltipoo
Age: 8
Nicknames: Schmoop, my Bubala, little man
Likes: cucumbers, his man cave under the bed, howling with his sister Daisy
Dislikes: when his mom isn’t home

Cooper is definitely the needy one. Mom is his primary and he hates when she isn’t home, sitting by the front door waiting until she returns. But once she’s home he’s just out for attention from whomever he can get it from. Guests are always treated to his high energy brand of flirting. Fun fact: he is puppy buddies with Fritzie!” – Cooper’s mom, Jenn

Dog of the Week

“Brandi
Pitbull/Shepherd Mix
Age 5/6
Nicknames: Moose, BBG (big beautiful girl)
Likes: Her family, whipped cream, and constantly going outside
Dislikes: people she doesn’t know, having her spot on the couch stolen

Shortly after we moved to our house in Murrieta Ca, we were playing tourist for a day and came upon a dog adoption event. The moment I saw her I knew she needed to be ours. She was already fairly large with red fur and the soulful amber eyes. We discussed it overnight and by the next day we were contacting the rescue to adopt her. She is very protective of her family, but even more so of her favorite, her daddy. She brings a whole lot of love, and sass, into our lives.” – Brandi’s mom, Jenn

Dog of the Week

Izzy (on the left) is a 13-year-old Maltese, and going strong. As a small pup, she energetically gave herself a concussion and has been eating her own poop since! She was raised by my grandma, who recently passed, and I was determined to be the most responsible dog owner (out of 6 potential candidates!). She loves cuddling on the couch; barking at the door, and going to the bathroom.

Bentleigh (on the right), is a 12 year-old Bernese Mountain Dog. She was born in Illinois and brought to Washington three years ago. She’s a good girl.” – Izzy & Bentleigh’s dad, Ken

Love Languages Quiz

Dog of the Week

“Name: Archer (Aka Archer T. Dogglesworth)
Age: 3-5 years
Breed: German Shepard and maybe Lab
Likes: Sleeping, Walks, car rides, Steak
Dislikes: Thunderstorms, being alone for any length of time

We rescued Archer about 3 weeks before the beginning of the Pandemic. He had a few problems when he was rescued from the wild and suffers from Lyme Disease, but he doesn’t let him get it down. Archer is generally the first one up every morning, and is ready for a brisk walk. Archer will not go to the bathroom in our yard, so it’s definitely a walk, and not just going in the back yard. He’s a really good boy who sheds nonstop. Archer make himself comfortable on any couch or bed where the people are, and I constantly have to fight to get him out of my spot when I’m trying to go to bed. He’s silly, and sweet, and we’re lucky to have him” – Archer’s dad, Eric

Charity of the Week:
Child’s Play

“Since 2003, we’ve set up and organized Child’s Play, a game industry charity dedicated to improving the lives of children with toys and games in our network of over 185 hospitals worldwide. Over the years, you as a community have answered the call and come together to raise millions of dollars.

Since 2003 Child’s Play has partnered with children’s hospitals all across the globe. Partner hospitals receive an annual gift designated to support their Child Life department through games and technology. Where available partner hospitals also have Amazon Wishlists tailored to their specific needs. Child’s Play also supports our partner hospitals by providing resources like our Therapeutic Video Game Guide and acting as a hub of knowledge where gaming and technology are concerned in the children’s hospital setting.

Since 2015 Child’s Play has been outfitting DV Shelters with game systems. Shelters receive a GAEMS case with an Xbox loaded with games carefully selected to be appropriate for the environment. The game system helps shelters create an inviting environment for young survivors and can be used as a part of therapy allowing for co-op play that helps break down barriers that kids/teens may have when asked to talk about abuse.” – Child’s Play
